Pre-primary education in South Africa starts when children are aged three and can run for a further four years until compulsory primary school education begins at aged seven.

Generally grade 00 is the year before grade R/0.  It roughly works as follows: ages 3-4 is Grade 000, ages 4-5 is grade 00 and ages 5-6 is grade R.

Grade R/0 or “Reception year” is the first year of education. Many Primary schools offer Grade R, although this pre-school year may also be completed at Nursery.
